Beagle Freedom Australia
Beagle Freedom Australia’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find homes for beagles used in laboratory research.

In Australia it is estimated that over 7,000 dogs were used in research facilities across 3 states including VIC, NSW & TAS in 2011 alone (with the other states statistics unavailable).* Beagles are generally the most popular breed for lab use because of their friendly and trusting, temperaments. The research industry says they adapt well to living in a cage, and are inexpensive to feed. Beagles and other dogs are usually sourced directly from commercial breeders who specifically breed dogs to sell to scientific institutions, but can also be sourced from other places such as pounds. Greyhounds and other dogs are also used.
Testing is done in universities and other research facilities for medical/pharmaceutical items, household products, cosmetics and for veterinary training. When the dogs are no longer useful or needed for testing they are put down. We aim to work with the labs to secure their safe release into our care so we can rehabilitate them and find homes so they can experience what life is really about, and not just the inside of a lab cage.
Beagle Freedom Australia is an extension of Beagle Rescue Victoria Inc, we have been rescuing and rehabilitating beagles from pounds, puppy farms and private surrenders for over a decade. Beagle Freedom Australia will also be working closely with The Beagle Freedom Project in the USA, and many other local groups in Victoria and Australia wide, in the hopes that together we can grow awareness of the unnecessary animal testing that occurs and wipe it out completely.
