Jonathan Balcombe

Jonathan Balcombe has a PhD in ethology (animal behaviour) from the University of Tennessee, where he studied communication in bats. He has published over 50 scientific papers and book chapters on animal behavior and animal protection. In 2011 he was presented with the St. Francis of Assisi Award by the New Zealand Companion Animal Council. He is the author of four books: The Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure (University of California Press, 2011); Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010); Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good (Macmillan, 2006); and The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives, and Recommendations (Humane Society Press, 2000). His next book, What a Fish Knows, is scheduled for publication in 2016. Jonathan recently served as Department Chair for Animal Studies with Humane Society University, and is now Director for Animal Sentience with the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy, in Washington, DC.
